I live in the Denver
Metro area, Colorado. Have two daughters living nearby, & a son in Neb,
9 grandchildren, & 2 great-grandsons. I attended Candlestick Cove School, Portola, & Balboa. My brother Dan Morningstar was a year older, & my sister Linda was born in 1948. My mother died in '82, my brother in '92, & my dad is still living in Calif 90 years old. Since 5 years old my first & best friend in the Cove was Bonnie Jane Bailey (Brennen) & we're both the same age.. her older brothers are Guy & Jim. After 44 years we've gotten back in touch through Classmates. As also with Hank Guernsey & Dave Kelly. At bldg 67 my bedroom was at the back by the Bay & I can still hear in my mind the sounds of the water, tide coming in & going out, seagulls. It must be that for so many years of my younger life the Bay was the last thing I'd see & hear before going to sleep, & the first when I'd awaken. I was one of the "bay swimmers" even though many would say ewwww. According to some people we should've died of a deadly plague in that water before even growing up, Ha. I remember seeing people fishing, & probably Duane & Jackie among them....... The old childhood area that was rich with adventure, drama, & danger. Kids growing up in that time were creative, because we had to find things to do before tv, computer, & cell phones, oh my, Ha. Even ice boxes & the blocks of ice being delivered were fun. We actually found plenty to do, & enjoyed it. Some of us remember standing at the end of the sewer & watching what came floating out into the Bay... one time my brother flushed a sock, I think, down the toilet & we ran to the sewer to see if it came out, it didn't (but Jackie says she saw it ROFL) I've never regretted my childhood as it was. Kool-ade & lemonade stands, riding bikes, snail mail, cars with fog lights, my poison oak days (just had to smell it), stray dogs following me home, the Cove store & the Drug store.. 5 cent ice cream cones, & of course the Rec Hall. Many remember Bill Manuel as the Cove cop. He helped a lot of kids, & had such a good influence in my life. He reminded me of my own Grandpa in Mich who had a wooden leg. My sister remembers when Bill Manuel used to let her knock on his wooden leg & they'd laugh. The Bayshore Theater was part of growing up in the Cove area, 25 cents I think. As was the Candlestick Cove school & the railroad tracks nearby, & Schlage Lock. Jiminez Mkt & Hillside Mkt. The subway going across Bayshore was a nightmare for some of us growing up.. glad it was closed, spare the children. How many of us remember the bus, 29? "Candlestick" name when it came into the Cove, stopped in front of the Cove store, went around in the circle behind Rec Hall, parked for a break & the name was changed to "Visitacion"? before going back out. When bored friends & I would ride the bus out of the Cove, around & back - loud & giggly - irritating the drivers :-) Anyone hear the story about a "Big foot" up on KYA hill? The hilltop was one spooky area. On the other hill was a hobo or also called a hermit living in a shack, where now Little Hollywood Park is. I remember the dump, which is not there anymore. Anyone remember a rope tied to a tree at the Bay of KYA hill, & swinging from it & dropping into the water? I recognize many "faces" from pictures of the past.. I'm sure we must've all seen each other here & there even if we don't remember names, & we're crossing paths with each other again from the Cove & area so many years later now.. how amazing can it get. Those days for many of us will never be forgotten, & thank you Duane & everyone who's sharing & enjoying this website. |
